In a moment of low spirits, George opens up to Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer about a troubling incident: his mother caught him in an intimate moment with her Glamour magazine. With his mother now hospitalized from the shock, George vows to quit masturbation “altogether,” and he dares his friends to a wager to see who can hold out the longest. The stakes tilt in favor of the women, who get two-to-one odds, so Elaine ends up putting in a little extra as part of the bet.
From Jerry’s window, a naked woman in the adjacent apartment becomes an irresistible distraction as George and Jerry stare in a mix of fascination and embarrassment. Kramer slips away, then quietly returns to cover the bet, while George’s mother—still in traction—dominates the scene with a harsh demand that he seek psychiatric help for his actions. In the rooms nearby, a shadowed nurse bathes an unseen patient, and silhouettes drift behind a curtain, feeding George’s fixation as the voyeuristic thread of the night winds tighter.
Meanwhile, Elaine dives into an aerobic class that becomes a celebrity cameo of sorts when John F. Kennedy Jr. appears among the exercisers. Flustered but excited, Elaine pretends to be a resident of Jerry’s building just to share a taxi with him, a ruse that flares into real anticipation. Jerry, on the other hand, wrestles with sexual frustration as Marla hesitates to lose her virginity, a hesitation that gnaws at him during the silent hours of the night when the others stubbornly persist in the contest.
As the group contends with sleeplessness, Kramer’s single-minded urge to peep at the naked woman continues, while Jerry tries to distract himself with cartoons on the TV. George, playing the role of a devoted son, visits his mother again, only to stall for time as she begs for a sandwich during sponge-bath hours, a scene that underscores the messy entanglement of affection and obligation in this unforgettable night. Kennedy eventually asks to meet Elaine again, and the encounter promises a brighter spark for her, a spark that she finally acts on as the fantasies invert into real possibility.
The emotional tallylight of the evening rises when Marla, after enduring the pressure, agrees to have sex, and Jerry feels a momentary sense of relief as he reveals the true nature of the contest to her. But Marla recoils, denounces the entire spectacle, and leaves in horror. Elaine, meanwhile, misses Kennedy’s anticipated arrival, only to discover him comforting Marla as he chooses to leave with her in the end.
Despite dropping out first, Kramer somehow lands the ultimate payoff by hooking up with the naked woman, a victory that leaves the others quietly envious as they watch the late-night payoff of desire. That same night, everyone discovers a rare calm as they drift into sleep, the contest now moot, while Marla and Kennedy’s secretive coupling marks a different, more intimate conclusion to the evening.
