Hélène Régnier, Stéphane Audran, is confronted when her drug-addicted husband Charles Regnier, Jean-Claude Drouot, injures their son Michel, Laurent Brunschwick, in a violent outburst. She defends herself with a frying pan and escapes with Michel to a boarding house near the hospital where the boy is recovering. The act marks a break with a suffocating household and triggers a tangled fight over custody and control. Reforming her life, she begins divorce proceedings and seeks legal help from Allan Jourdan, Michel Duchaussoy, who, despite her limited finances, agrees to support her case. At the same time, Charles’s affluent and controlling parents move to reclaim their grandson, hoping to gain custody of Michel.

Ludovic Régnier, Hélène’s father-in-law, Michel Bouquet, hires Paul Thomas, Jean-Pierre Cassel, a family acquaintance, to uncover damaging information about Hélène. Paul, with his girlfriend Sonia, Catherine Rouvel, moves into the boarding house and crafts a plan to ruin Hélène’s reputation. Yet their plot fails to shake her resolve or alter the balance of power in the custody battle.

In the film’s tense climax, Paul drugs Hélène and Charles is murdered in front of her, a shocking turn that casts a pall over the proceedings. As this brutal act unfolds, Hélène traverses a surreal, dreamlike landscape that blurs the lines between fear, memory, and reality, leaving the ultimate outcome of the custody case murky and unresolved.
