The Bodyguard 1979

The setting is Central Asia during the Russian Civil War. In the post-revolutionary twenties, when the power in European Russia is officially in the hands of the workers and peasants, the struggle against the Basmachi rebels intensifies. When a Red Army detachment captures Sultan Nazar, Anatoliy Solonitsyn, the brains behind the Basmachi faction, a decision is made to escort him urgently to the Bukhara province. The mission is urgent, dangerous, and steeped in vigilance as the region’s politics ripple through every mile of the journey.

Leading the mission is Mirzo, [Aleksandr Kaydanovskiy], a grizzled mountain trapper and conscientious revolutionary. His hard-won experience with treacherous terrain becomes essential as the group threads their way through precarious paths and climbs steep mountain ridges that would overwhelm the inexperienced. The expedition brings together a small, uneasy band: Mirzo, his brother Kova, the captured Sultan Nazar, Nazar’s daughter Zarangis [Anvara Alimova], and the slave Saifulla. Each member carries a different burden and motive, yet they are bound by a fragile purpose: get Sultan Nazar to safety and to the authorities in Bukhara.
