The Birdmen 1971

During World War II, Major Cook, an O.S.S. agent, is tasked with extracting Halden Brevik, a Norwegian scientist who holds crucial knowledge about the atomic bomb, from occupied Europe. The Germans capture them and believe they are Allied air force POW escapees, shipping them to the escape-proof Beckstadt Castle. Cook works to keep Brevik’s true identity hidden from the Germans and from the other POWs while quietly plotting an audacious exit.

Cook devises a plan to break out by air, overseeing the clandestine construction of a two-seater glider in an attic. As German pressure tightens, he decides that Brevik must be one of the escapees, and he reveals Brevik’s real identity to the group to secure his place in the flight. The other POWs grow wary, doubting Cook’s story, but one prisoner—a commando who had been captured (and blinded) during a failed earlier attempt to extract Brevik from Norway—confirms Brevik’s identity and legitimizes the mission.

In the ensuing crisis, Cook is injured and unable to pilot the glider, so he relinquishes the seat to Colonel Morgan Crawford, his strongest skeptic, turning the escape into a test of trust between them. The prisoners then knock out a wall and, with Crawford at the controls, launch the glider toward freedom. The perilous ascent tests nerves and loyalty alike, yet the crew presses on, their careful coordination turning a desperate plan into a living gamble for survival.

The escape scene highlights the delicate balance between secrecy, sacrifice, and courage. Brevik’s presence is justified not just by the risk it carries for the captors but by the potential knowledge that could influence the broader war effort. The narrative emphasizes teamwork under pressure, the strain of suspicion among prisoners, and the moment when doubt yields to action as the glider lifts from Beckstadt Castle, carrying hope across the border toward Switzerland.
