The Annunciation (Angyali üdvözlet) is András Jeles’s 1984 Hungarian film based on Imre Madách’s 1861 play The Tragedy of Man. After Adam (Péter Bocsor) and Eve (Júlia Mérő) are expelled from Eden, Adam forces Lucifer (Eszter Gyalog) to keep his promise, granting a dream of history. Adam becomes Miltiades in Athens, Tancred in Byzantium, Kepler in Prague, Danton in revolutionary Paris, and a nameless suitor in Victorian London, confronting humanity’s recurring cruelty, betrayal and fanaticism.
