Fifty-two-year-old Leung Foon, Lawrence Cheng Tan-Shui, has spent a large portion of his life marked by three defining waves. The first comes on the day his wife, Ann, changes him from a boy into a man. The second arrives when he marries Ann and steps into the role of a husband who is perhaps a little too certain of his own authority. The third and most painful wave hits when Ann, fed up with his flaws, leaves and takes their eight-year-old daughter with her. These seismic moments shape his outlook and push him to channel grief into energy, ambition, and a newfound sense of control.

Over time, Foon transforms from a figure of pity into a force to be reckoned with. He climbs the ladder of success and becomes the chairman of a listed company, a position that brings him substantial wealth and a life free from daily financial stress. Yet wealth cannot erase the sting of the past, and one of his deepest regrets is that Ann will never see the height of the “maturity” he believes he has achieved. Paradoxically, fortune seems to estrange him from his own reflection; for reasons he cannot fully name, he avoids looking at himself in the mirror.

The narrative pivots dramatically when his daughter Hei-hei, now grown, returns home. Hei-hei, Larine Tang Yue-Ping, is eighteen and bears the marks of time apart from her father.
