The Wooden Camera 2003

Set against the vast landscapes of Cape Town and the shadowed streets of Khayelitsha, this film follows two teenage friends: the younger Madiba Junior Singo and the elder Sipho Innocent Msimango. One day, while they play near the railroad tracks, they uncover a dead body that changes everything. With the body they find a gun with a single bullet and a video camera. Sipho takes the gun, while Madiba pockets the camera, disguising it as a non-working toy by tucking it into a wooden toy-cam. The moment carries a quiet tension: Sipho jokes about the gun at first, but the path he treads grows darker.

As time passes, Sipho becomes more distant from Khayelitsha, spending nights in Cape Town and engaging in petty crime—robbing parking meters and using the money to buy glue to sniff. He eventually finds shelter in abandoned places in the city, joining a group of dangerous youths and losing touch with the playful innocence the two once shared.

Meanwhile, Madiba uses the camera to film the world around him, discovering striking beauty in both Khayelitsha and Cape Town. He experiments with various filming techniques, showcasing a natural talent that feels intimate and personal; his work is something he guards closely, rarely sharing it with others. Through his lens, he captures quiet moments, textures of everyday life, and the complex social fabric of the communities he sees.

In Cape Town, Madiba crosses paths with Estelle Dana de Agrella, a white Cape Town girl from a wealthy family. Estelle’s presence introduces a conflict with her father, who embodies a climate of racism that contrasts with Estelle’s curiosity and openness. The two form an unlikely friendship that becomes a counterpoint to Sipho’s volatility, offering a glimpse of empathy and connection across social divides.

As Sipho’s robberies escalate, Madiba grows uneasy about the violence and disapproves of the stolen money, even as he remains loyal to his friend. The tension peaks when one of Sipho’s robberies goes tragically wrong, leading to Sipho’s death. The event leaves Madiba to reckon with the consequences of the choices surrounding him and the fragile ties that bind friends.

In the final act, the film follows Madiba and Estelle as they escape together, boarding a train toward an uncertain future. The closing image is one of movement and possibility, a quiet, hopeful end that suggests a path beyond the violence that marked their earlier days.
