The Warrior’s Husband 1933

In Pontus, the land of the Amazons, gender roles and natures are completely reversed: women are the strong sex, supported by the sacred girdle of the goddess Diana. This power is safeguarded by queen Hippolyta Marjorie Rambeau and her sister Antiope Elissa Landi, who commands the female armed forces. Men stay at home to take care of the children, and only Sapiens Ferdinand Gottschalk, Hippolyta’s husband, advocates for men’s rights.

As this upside-down world turns the usual dynamics on their head, the Greeks are treated as a legendary, perhaps mythical, race rather than the other way around. The story pivots when two Greeks arrive at court to announce that Hercules Tiny Sandford must obtain the girdle of Diana to complete his twelve labors. Yet the real threat may come from Theseus David Manners, a friend who looms as a formidable challenge to the Amazon defenses.

Meanwhile, Sapiens Ferdinand Gottschalk uses his male wiles to quietly undermine the Amazon defenses from within, pursuing a plan to weaken the women’s guard. In a dramatic turn, he manages to capture Hercules and then engineers an escape with the girdle, a move that could tilt the balance of power in favor of the intruders.

Without the girdle, the Amazons’ strength wanes, and the battle’s outcome edges toward the social mores of the 1930s. The tale unfolds as power, loyalty, and deception collide, inviting viewers to witness how control of a single symbolic item can redraw an entire society—and redefine gender roles in the process.
