This meticulous sequence work sets the stage for evaluating how the immune system might respond to the virus and how a vaccine could be designed to train that response.

Building on these foundations, the team reports the development of an inactivated whole-virion vaccine, BBV152, a formulation designed to present the immune system with the complete virus in a safe, non-replicating form. The vaccine demonstrates a neutralizing antibody response in animal studies, providing a hopeful signal that the immune system could be primed to recognize and defend against the real pathogen. This early success supports progression to a phase I clinical trial, conducted against the reference strain hCoV-19/India/2020770, marking a pivotal step toward potential human protection.
