On 10 April 1912 the RMS Titanic left Southampton for New York on its maiden voyage, one of the largest luxury liners. Equipped with watertight compartments, she was deemed unsinkable—a deckhand claimed “God himself could not sink this ship.” After hitting an iceberg on 14 April, she sank in the early hours of 15 April, killing about 1,500 people.
