The Ugly Duckling 1931

A hen is asleep when her eggs hatch, and a moment of quiet turns into a lively surprise on the farm. Six female chicks burst from their shells with bright, eager chirps, thrilling Mother Hen, yet the last egg reveals a duckling who has somehow mixed in with the flock. From the start, the hen and the chick brood instinctively circle the newcomer, and the duckling is quickly set apart. Despite his best efforts to belong, he struggles to fit in with his chick sisters, and his attempts to connect with others—trying to approach a dog, a cow, and even a frog—end in a series of gentle rejections. Then danger arrives in the form of a weather warning. The cow’s loud mooing crackles through the air, signaling that a tornado is bearing down on the farm. In a rush of panic, the hen and her chicks sprint toward the shelter of the hen house, but the duckling, unaccepted by the group, is left outside and forced to seek safety on his own.

The tension heightens when the hen’s chicks face peril amid a waterfall threat, as the hen house is swept away by the storm’s force and toppled into a river. The little duckling bravely cuts through debris-filled water, swimming toward them against the current, determined to bring help. The hen cries out in fear for her daughters as danger closes in. The duck reaches the hen house just as a first tree crashes through it. He acts quickly, ordering the chicks to retreat inside, and a second tree follows, intensifying the danger. He then directs his sisters to hurry to the fireplace blower, leaping onto the mechanism a few times to ride the gusts and ferry them to safety. The siblings regroup, and the duck is celebrated as a hero by his sisters for his courage and resourcefulness.

In the wake of the chaos, a tender moment unfolds: the hen lifts the duckling into her arms, recognizing him as her son at last, and she embraces him with a mix of relief and pride.
