Spoilers ahead
On a moving train, Hanoi-based journalist Vũ, Tất Bình, drifts back to Lang Son, the border town, to recall the day he arrived to cover the Sino-Vietnamese War that had just begun. The memory is stark and unsettled: most Vietnamese people were evacuated, and the town is strewn with signs of tragedy—dead bodies hanging and lying in the streets, a grim reminder of conflict that has touched every corner of life. The atmosphere is heavy, almost hushed, as if the town itself is holding its breath while the war presses in from the hills.
