Shin Chi-ho, Yoon Yang-ha, a nobleman, has long sought to secure a male heir to carry on his family name. His wife, Pil-nyeo, Kim Hyung-ja, grants permission to search for a surrogate, setting the stage for a delicate negotiation between duty, desire, and tradition. On the road to finding a surrogate, Shin meets Ok-nyo, Kang Soo-yeon — a poor yet stubborn 17-year-old girl who makes no secret of her willingness to do anything for money. Her fiery resolve and quick wit attract Shin, and he decides to appoint her as the mother of his child, a choice that will pull them both into a dangerous, uncharted space.

Ok-nyo enters a rigid, secret arrangement. She is kept inside a secluded building, hidden during the day and asked to perform the necessary encounters during the hours set by Shin’s wife. The power imbalance is stark: a young servant by birth, she moves through a tightly controlled routine that is designed to satisfy the husband’s lineage while stifling her own freedom. Yet beneath the rules, a complex bond starts to form. Shin’s growing infatuation and Ok-nyo’s growing attachment push them toward moments of quiet intimacy, exceptions to the otherwise rigid boundaries that govern their lives. Their private encounters become a fragile lifeline in a world that insists on propriety and distance.

Conflict arrives when the relationship is discovered. The discovery brings punishment, a public reprimand that serves as a stark reminder of the costs attached to crossing the line between class and desire. Ok-nyo’s mother tries to pull her back from this path, speaking bluntly about the harsh realities of life and the price of pursuing such forbidden closeness. Despite the warnings and the consequences, the pair continues to meet in secret, clinging to the hope that their connection might endure beyond the walls that confine them.

Eventually, Ok-nyo conceives an heir for Shin, a moment that seems to secure a kind of continuity for the family line. Yet the promise is tempered by fear and uncertainty: will Shin remain by her side, or will he walk away with the child and the life that accompanies it? The emotional burden weighs heavily on Ok-nyo as she contemplates a future shaped by a choice made within a restricted world. The film leaves us with a quiet, unresolved tension—a meditation on power, obligation, and the human longing for companionship under the weight of social boundaries.
