The Sun in a Net 1963

Oldrich “Fajolo” Fajták, [Marián Bielik], a student who directs quasi-existential verbal abuse at his girlfriend Bela Blažejová, [Jana Beláková], heads off to a formally labeled summer work camp at a farm that is actually mandated by the authorities, a setup that nudges both of them to seek connection with someone else. This choice sets the stage for a web of fragile loyalties and shifting affections as the summer unfolds.

A parallel thread peels back Bela Blažejová’s tense home life. Her world is shaped by her mother, Stana Blazejová, [Eliška Nosálová], whose studied helplessness hints at deeper wounds, and by her father, Ján Blazej, [Andrej Vandlík], whose infidelity and a strained history with his own father—who lives in the same village—complicate Bela’s sense of security. In this village atmosphere, Bela’s emotional defenses are tested as she becomes entangled in new relationships and revelations, while Fajolo’s curiosity about her grandfather’s secrets grows.

As Fajolo begins to pry into the old family mysteries, Bela lets her new partner Peťo, [Ľubomír Roman], read and poke at Fajolo’s discursive, remorseful letters from the farm. The letters themselves become a live thread in the evolving drama, turning the farm camp into a laboratory for ideas about guilt, longing, and the possibility of genuine closeness. The tension between the two couples—Fajolo’s introspective wandering and Bela’s more practical attachments—drives a subtle, constant pressure beneath the surface.

The film threads its mood through a recurring symbol: a solar eclipse that the main characters barely notice through heavy clouds at the outset. This celestial moment echoes in the way the sun returns in later scenes, casting long, shimmering images on the water and on the nets of a fisherman who drifts beyond the city’s suburbs. The Danube and its pontoon become a shared stage for the characters to float between reflection and flirtation. The pontoon serves as a swimming deck, a place to contemplate life, and, at times, a stage to try to draw Bela closer, to test the limits of each other’s loyalties.

When Bela eventually brings her mother and her brother Milo, [Peter Lobotka], to the pontoon after a sequence of subdued interpersonal crises, the water level has fallen and the pontoon sits on dry land. The film closes with Bela and Milo lying to their mother about what they can truly see, mirroring how they misread or denied the eclipse’s visibility in the opening moments. In the end, the same questions that opened the story—what one reveals and what one keeps hidden—linger, leaving a quiet, unresolved sense that life mirrors the sky: partial glimpses, shifting light, and the ache to understand what is really seen.
