Jennifer Morgan is a young painter who has withdrawn from the world after a brutal rape two years earlier. At a family gathering, she crosses paths with Chris Gallagher, who falls hard for her. Though she struggles with intimacy, he persuades her to marry him, and she clings to the hope that marriage might help her leave the trauma behind. Soon after the wedding, Dana—Chris’s 17-year-old cousin—warns Jennifer that happiness with him may be elusive. Jennifer, however, chooses to ignore the warning. With Chris newly in the Navy, she agrees to relocate to a seaside town where she forms a friendship with Nancy Halloran and begins to envision a quieter life.
Not long after, a neighbor, Gina Corbet, becomes the target of a peeping tom and is later raped by a masked assailant. The neighborhood trembles as fear spreads, and many women flee in panic, but Chris minimizes the danger and tries to reassure Jennifer that they are overreacting. As time passes, though, Chris’s behavior shifts: a harsh, possessive mood emerges, signaling a darker temper that Jennifer has to navigate. Jennifer discovers that Chris has left the Navy after threatening to take his own life, and when she confronts him, he accuses her of spying on him. The same night, Chris is arrested for voyeurism and pleads guilty, agreeing to a discharge from the Navy.
This turn of events devastates Jennifer, who has just learned she is pregnant. Despite the shock, she gives Chris another chance. They return to their former home, and for a while, life looks steadier. Yet the cycle of danger resumes as a masked rapist begins preying on women in the neighborhood. Concurrently, Jennifer learns that Chris’s temper is growing more dangerous, and she faces the complex reality of pregnancy while grappling with fear for her safety and that of her unborn child.
As Jennifer’s realization deepens, she uncovers a troubling family secret: Dana reveals that Chris molested her when she was a child. This revelation, combined with the broader pattern of violent acts, convinces Jennifer that Chris is involved in the neighborhood rapes. A detective from California confirms there was enough evidence to pursue something, but the case was blocked due to Chris being shielded by a district attorney friend. Horrified by these revelations, Jennifer resolves to leave Chris, even as the threat of his retaliation looms large.
Chris refuses to let her go and grows increasingly abusive. Jennifer finds momentary solace when two police officers intervene, led by Officer Kurtz, but she ends up withdrawing the charges after Chris convinces her he will never be convicted and threatens harm to her and their baby if she stays. She begins a careful, dangerous effort to gather proof by posing as his devoted wife. In a cautious bid to build a case, she locates weapons in his car, but before the authorities can seize them, the evidence vanishes, reinforcing her fear that Chris’s power and influence may outmaneuver them.
The danger intensifies, and Chris’s violent nature escalates. One night, Jennifer shadows him as he slips away, only to witness him preparing to rape someone else. She sabotages his car and alerts Officer Kurtz. The responding police manage to halt the assault, and Chris’s attempt to flee ends with his capture. He pleads guilty to four counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault, receiving a severe sentence of 99 years in prison. Jennifer and her daughter continue to live in the Southwestern United States, seeking a precarious sense of safety and a future unmarred by fear.
Throughout the ordeal, the narrative threads together a harrowing portrait of a woman who must navigate a web of personal trauma, deception, and systemic obstacles to protect herself and her child. The film tracks Jennifer’s quiet, stubborn courage as she weighs trust against danger, patience against desperation, and the hard truth that escape from abuse often requires immense personal risk. In the end, the resolution rests on Jennifer’s decision to bring the truth to light, even at great personal cost, and on the relentless pursuit of justice in the face of intimidation and power.
