Jennifer Morgan is a young painter who has secluded herself from the world since a traumatic rape two years earlier. At a family party, she meets Chris Gallagher, who falls in love with her, and his earnest warmth draws her out of her isolation. She is hesitant to be intimate, but he persuades her to marry him, and she hopes the new union will help her put her past behind her. Shortly after the ceremony, Chris’ 17-year-old cousin Dana warns Jennifer that she may not be happy with him, but Jennifer chooses to ignore the warning and try to build a life with the man she loves.
Because Chris has recently joined the Navy, Jennifer agrees to move with him to the seaside, where she befriends Nancy Halloran. The couple’s fragile happiness is shaken when Gina, a neighbor, becomes the victim of a peeping tom and is later raped by a masked man. Panic sweeps the neighborhood, yet Chris dismisses the danger and tries to reassure Jennifer that they are overreacting. Hidden tensions begin to surface as Chris’ temper grows more volatile and possessive, revealing a darker side to the man she married.
Jennifer learns that Chris has been released from his Navy duties after threatening to kill himself. When she confronts him, he accuses her of spying on him, and the same night he is arrested for voyeurism. He pleads guilty and agrees to discharge from the Navy. The news devastates Jennifer, who has just discovered she is pregnant. Despite this, she gives him another chance, and they move back to their previous home. For a while, life seems to improve, but the shadow of danger returns as a masked rapist again targets women in the neighborhood, and Chris’ temper flares anew.
After the birth of Jennifer’s daughter, Dana reveals that Chris molested her when she was a child. The revelation horrifies Jennifer, who begins to suspect his involvement in the neighborhood rapes. A detective from California explains that there was evidence against Chris, but he was shielded by a district attorney friend. Terrified and determined to protect herself, Jennifer resolves to leave him. Chris refuses to let her go, escalating his abuse, and Jennifer is eventually rescued by two officers led by Officer Kurtz. She presses charges, but later withdraws them after Chris makes threats and swears he will not be convicted if she stays.
Jennifer befriends the steady, if cautious, [Officer Kurtz], who remains convinced of Chris’s guilt even as he struggles to act without solid proof. Under the pressure of fear and loyalty, she fabricates a fragile alliance with the police to gather evidence against him, posing as his loving wife to observe his movements. When she discovers weapons in his car, the moment to act seems within reach, but by the time the police arrive, the weapons have disappeared. Chris’ violence escalates, and one night Jennifer follows him as he sneaks out again.
She catches him preparing to rape someone and sabotages his car, warning Officer Kurtz just in time. The police arrive and halt the assault, but Chris’s escape attempt fails, and he is arrested. He pleads guilty to four counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of sexually attempting an assault, and is sentenced to 99 years in prison. Jennifer and her daughter continue to live in the Southwestern United States, finally stepping into a future where safety—and a new sense of possibility—may begin to take root.
