Wyndham Scott Haze journeys alone into a remote desert to observe a solar eclipse, capturing its awe-inspiring spectacle through his camera lens. As he prepares to leave, he hears the mournful cries of a boy named Orion, Charlie Avink, who appears to be lost and crying for his parents. Wyndham’s compassionate nature prompts him to try to help Orion find his way, but the boy’s demeanor suddenly shifts from innocent to malicious. Instead of being confused and helpless, Orion reveals a hidden cunning, leading Wyndham astray and betraying his trust. It becomes clear that Orion’s seemingly innocent act was a calculated deception designed to divert Wyndham from his path back to safety.

Later, Wyndham finds himself completely stranded in the vast, arid desert with no water or food, struggling to survive. His predicament worsens when he encounters a seemingly deserted tin shelter inhabited by a woman named Alina, played by Kate Lyn Sheil. At first, Wyndham sees her as his only hope, as she offers him food and aid, seemingly waiting for his arrival. The atmosphere around her home feels ominous and unsettling; her calm acceptance of Wyndham’s presence raises suspicions, though he is desperate enough to accept her hospitality and rest for the night. When he awakens the next morning, the ladder he used to climb down is mysteriously gone, and Alina suggests that villagers have taken it for their use. Despite her words, Wyndham senses something sinister in her demeanor and the place he is trapped in.

As Wyndham attempts to find a way out, he uses a claw hammer to climb the steep rocks, but his efforts are violently interrupted when a severed animal head is flung toward him, causing him to fall and injure himself. When he regains consciousness, Alina helps him remove the hammer embedded in his leg, but the pain and helplessness only grow. During his recovery, Wyndham begins to see that Alina’s kindness is a facade—she offers little actual assistance and maintains an air of detachment. It becomes painfully evident that Wyndham has been held captive by her, and her words about fate and destiny are chilling; she urges him not to resist and promises to care for him indefinitely. Despite this, Wyndham refuses to surrender and continues to seek a way out.

Eventually, Wyndham’s pleas for help draw the attention of villagers passing by. He asks for their aid, hoping to escape, but instead of liberation, they return with a rope, subjecting Wyndham to further torment. They communicate in a strange, unfamiliar language, mocking him and relishing his humiliation. It is only when Alina intervenes and commands them to stop that they depart. When Wyndham questions Alina about the villagers, she dismisses them as bored and stupid, further fueling his sense of despair. That night, Wyndham suffers abuse at the hands of the villagers, and his dreams of escape fade further.

As the story progresses during Harvest Moon, Wyndham finds himself gradually losing hope but adapting to his harsh environment. Alina gives him a set of clothes that hint at her tragic past, and Wyndham begins sowing seeds on the barren land, recognizing the tiny, almost self-sustaining ecosystem they inhabit. The villagers continue to bring supplies—ranging from chocolates to alcohol—though Wyndham is increasingly bewildered about their origins. He suspects Alina was once a victim too, and her resigned acceptance of her fate hints at a cycle from which she cannot escape. His frustration boils over after getting drunk one night, and he laments the plight of himself and Alina, trapped by violent children who serve as both protectors and oppressors.

In a striking encounter, Wyndham notices a boy named Lepus, Thatcher Jacobs, who is more inquisitive and genuine than the other children. Lepus’s innocence and curiosity inspire Wyndham to believe he might be able to help him escape the cult-like village. Wyndham promises to take Lepus along if he helps him leave the desert, and even hopes that Alina—Kate Lyn Sheil—could come with them. However, their plan is soon foiled when the bratty, aggressive Arvo, Michael Monsour, overhears their conversation. Tragically, Lepus is killed by Alina’s other children, a loss that devastates her. Her screams of frustration reveal that Lepus was her son, and she blames Wyndham for his death—propelled by grief and fury.

Throughout these events, Wyndham uncovers disturbing truths: Alina’s entire existence is rooted in manipulation and fear. The woman in an old photograph at her house is revealed to be the original matriarch, hinting that she founded the cult. The children, including Orion and Lepus, are her offspring or members of her extended family, all born into a cycle of control and reproduction. The marks on Alina’s back match those on some of the children, symbolizing their shared bond and the cult’s sinister web. Alina’s primary role is to serve as a nurturing, maternal figure of the cult, which she has accepted due to her belief that the outside world is fictitious—its reality inferior to their isolated existence. The community is sustained through rituals and teachings that emphasize motherhood and control over their environment.

When Lepus’s death occurs, Alina decides Wyndham must be confined in a cage, viewing him as no longer useful after he resists her plans. Despite her initial kindness, she’s revealed to have an ulterior motive: Wyndham’s seed—his genetic material—was her only purpose for bringing him there. She doesn’t intend to keep him alive for companionship but solely to reproduce. Wyndham realizes this too late, and her sinister plan unfolds as she waits for the birth of her child. During a rare moment of vulnerability, Wyndham is called upon during Alina’s labor during a blue moon. She begs him to help her, and he hesitates, torn between helping her and his instinct to escape. The ladder, which symbolizes his potential way out, suddenly appears before him, and he makes a choice—drawn by the possibility of freedom, he abandons her and walks toward the ladder.

However, the sound of his newborn daughter’s cry tugs at him, and Wyndham’s primal instincts lead him back to Alina. Even though he’s been held captive, this instinct reveals his desire to be a father, to belong. Yet, if Wyndham lives, it’s clear he will always be torn between the desire for escape and the bonds he’s unwillingly formed.

The story concludes with Alina cradling her daughter, asserting that one day, the girl will be the new Mother—a symbol of their cycle of power and darkness. Her birth coincides with the solar eclipse, symbolizing the perpetuation of evil and control within this isolated cult. Wyndham Stone’s fate is sealed when he is murdered after fulfilling his role in their sinister plans. His decomposing body outside Alina’s home embodies the grotesque cycle of life and death that sustains the cult. The closing scene starkly echoes the opening image, with Alina’s daughter feeding on what remains of Wyndham’s rotted finger, a haunting reminder that in this secluded world, nothing goes to waste and darkness is eternal.
