The Scream Team 2002

Two children, Ian Carlyle Mark Rendall and Claire Carlyle Kat Dennings, move into a town where their grandfather, Grandpa Frank Carlyle Gary Reineke, has just died. Ian senses that his grandfather’s spirit might be trying to tell them something, and he dives into clues from the past, uncovering library news clippings about a man named Zachariah Kull Kim Coates, who was accused of burning his own home with his wife inside. The siblings’ curiosity soon leads them to a curious encounter with a ghost named Jumper Tommy Davidson, a dead skydiver who is briefly freed by his partner, Coffin Ed Eric Idle, a Revolutionary-era soldier who remains tethered to the living world.

From there, the young duo trail wisps of ghostly air that drift toward a forest and an abandoned building. Inside, they witness arriving ghosts pouring into a mirror that acts as a doorway to the afterlife. The two spectral guides, Coffin Ed and Jumper, are not alone in their world of crossings; Mariah Kathy Najimy, a dead bride who serves as Jumper’s boss, is far from pleased by the disruption the children cause. Ian and Claire come to understand that they are part of a group known as the Soul Patrol—souls who have chosen to help others cross over or linger by choice, a role Jumper proudly labels as their job while waiting for their turn to pass on.

When Grandpa’s unfinished business becomes a lever for trouble, the children learn that Zachariah Kull has kidnapped their grandfather to boost his own power. The pair join forces with the Soul Patrol to stop Zachariah and free the souls he’s trapped. Their pursuit leads them to an abandoned mine where Mariah manages to fend off Zachariah’s fireballs, only to realize he has somehow gained even more strength. Jumper is captured at a pivotal moment, tipping the balance in Zachariah’s favor, and the stakes rise quickly as the entangled spirits tremble on the edge of both worlds.

What follows reframes the mystery: Zachariah is not the simple villain he’s painted as, but a misunderstood inventor who experimented with natural gas. A tragic accident—his wife perishing in a blaze he tried to avert—shaped the man’s later desire for vengeance and his inability to cross over. When Zachariah’s life ends, he tells his wife to wait for him, knowing crossing over would be blocked by his unresolved anger. At a town festival that has long celebrated the supposed villain, Zachariah steps from a burning effigy, only to be confronted by Claire and Ian, who remind him that his wife still waits for him beyond the veil. Rejoining the living and the dead, he releases all the trapped souls and finally moves on.

The children and their father return home to find the grandfather’s spirit waiting for them, and the Soul Patrol honors their promise to help him complete his unfinished business. Grandpa reveals how proud he is of his son, a sentiment he never found the chance to express in life. When asked if he must leave immediately, he answers with a gentle line that lingers: eternity can wait awhile, and he spends precious time catching up with his son before moving on. The family decides to stay in a town that is learning to tell the truth about its former ghost, switching from fear and suspicion to understanding and story-telling.

By day, Ian and Claire visit the Soul Patrol, where they discover that Jumper and Ed are still keeping Mariah in the loop with their bosses in the next world. Mariah returns with a heavy heart, explaining that the spectacle they staged to stop Zachariah exposed a larger truth: there is an afterlife, and their work continues. The revelation leaves Mariah anguished, but it also ensures the extension of the Soul Patrol’s responsibilities. As the film closes, Ed joins the siblings in carving pumpkins using one of their grandfather’s inventions, a playful reminder of the living world’s enduring humor: there are some advantages to being dead.
