The Scent of Incense 1964

Spanning the Russo-Japanese War era (1904–1905) to the postwar years, The Scent of Incense traces the long shadow of a mother-daughter bond that is tested by time, circumstance, and social change. Ikuyo, a mother preparing to remarry, entrusts Tomoko to her grandmother Tsuna, a decision that plants the seeds of distance between them. After Tsuna’s death, Ikuyo makes a drastic turn and sells Tomoko to a geisha house, setting her daughter on a path defined by performance, status, and the judgments of a society that scrutinizes women’s choices.

Tomoko [Mariko Okada], now a geisha, enters a complicated romance with Ezaki Gō Katō, but his family refuses to bless the match because Ikuyo’s past sullies their name. Tomoko escapes the limits of the geisha world to become the mistress of her own business, the madam of a geisha house, yet a devastating 1923 earthquake shatters her property and forces her to confront loss in a city that is literally rebuilding itself. Ikuyo remarries again, a reminder that personal history and hardship continue to weave through the generations. Meanwhile Tomoko declines Nozawa Eiji Okada’s offer to become his mistress, choosing her own path despite the social costs.

In the war-ravaged aftermath, Tomoko and Ikuyo take shelter in a cellar beneath bomb-ridden Tokyo, a stark setting where memory and survival intertwine. Ikuyo is reunited with a former servant who had disappeared during the Second World War, and the encounter unsettles both women as they face what remains of their past. Tomoko learns that Ezaki has been imprisoned and sentenced to death for war crimes; she travels for months to visit him in jail, only to be met with a stoic pretense that he does not know her. After Ikuyo dies in a traffic accident while Tomoko is hospitalized, the former servant returns to his hometown, and the final gesture of the film is Tomoko adding Ikuyo’s name to the family shrine, a quiet act that seals memory, lineage, and endurance into the family’s legacy.
