The Resurrection of Zachary Wheeler 1971

Reporter Harry Walsh, Leslie Nielsen, witnesses a fatal auto accident and quickly recognizes the survivor as Senator Clayton Zachary Wheeler, Bradford Dillman. He files his report from the hospital, but hospital staff insist no such senator has been admitted. Walsh’s editor orders a retraction, which he refuses to publish, risking his job in the process. His tenacious digging leads him to Alamogordo, New Mexico, where clues begin to point to something more than a simple accident.

Meanwhile, Wheeler awakens in a secret medical facility run by James Daly as Dr. Redding and Angie Dickinson as Dr. Layle Johnson. He discovers he has undergone an extraordinary transplant using somas—bodies grown from his own DNA. The revelation unsettles him, but it also hints at a broader, hidden program that manipulates life and power from behind the scenes.

Across town, Walsh evades two bumbling agents and teams up with migrant workers to press onward toward the desert research site. Wheeler learns that the price of his surgery is to serve as a political instrument for a powerful committee—a form of medical blackmail. Robert J. Wilke plays Fielding, the Committee chairman who bluntly calls this arrangement “a new type of money” and warns that the scandal could derail Wheeler’s presidential ambitions if the truth ever comes to light.

In Alamogordo, Walsh deduces Wheeler’s plane must have flown to Los Alamos, near the site of the old Manhattan Project. With help from a newspaper buddy, he lands at the base and uncovers an extra soma—another body grown from Wheeler’s DNA. Believing it to be the senator, he frees the clone and seizes Dr. Johnson’s car, pulling the chase into a perilous desert road sequence. The pursuit spirals into a tense collision course as the car crashes and Johnson is injured, giving Fielding a new angle to pressure Wheeler.

Fielding seizes the moment to intimidate Wheeler, threatening to withdraw support and end his chances at the presidency if the operation is exposed. Wheeler’s growing attachment to Johnson tempers his resolve, though Dr. Redding insists that her injuries are minor and the danger can be managed. The emotional tension deepens as loyalty, power, and the promise of public good clash with personal safety and political advantage.

Ultimately, Walsh and Wheeler converge with a shared purpose: to expose the Committee and its soma program. Yet as they prepare to reveal the truth, Fielding and Dr. Redding discuss a new “client” they have been hoping to recruit, leaving the door open for a larger, more troubling conspiracy. The film balances thriller elements with ethical questions about medical advancement, political influence, and the cost of power, inviting viewers to weigh the risks of secrecy against the price of transparency.
