Since the Great Sundering, the world has been split into two harsh realms: the land of fire, a vast desert inhabited by the Pyross, and the land of water, home to the Hydross. The Pyross have red skin and stocky, muscular builds; rain is deadly to them, while sunstones glow as both money and energy. During the rainy season, they seal themselves inside a city of stone to shield from the downpour and from roaming water dragons that wander into Pyross territory. The Hydross, with blue or turquoise skin and curvier features, rely on water for life. In summer, they turn into stone statues, leaving them vulnerable, while the Pyross can venture into Hydross lands and destroy as many Hydross statues as they can before the rains return. The two peoples know very little about one another, and even touch is forbidden: the contact of Hydross skin with Pyross skin burns both ways.
Against this tense backdrop, two young people from opposite sides spark a fragile change: Skan, a Pyross, and Kallisto, a Hydross. In improbable circumstances they meet and, despite overwhelming odds, strive to stop the eternal war. Their alliance offers a glimmer of possibility—if they can bridge fear and mistrust, perhaps the world can move toward something beyond endless conflict.
