Graduates of the Peter Vinogradov school—Senya Kaufman and Kotya Ohotnikov—leave their provincial town for Moscow, vowing to remember their hometown and friends. Peter, melancholic, bids farewell to his beloved Valya while dreaming of entering the Moscow Conservatory. In the capital the trio takes jobs at a car factory and enrolls in evening courses, beginning their new adult lives.
