Rupert Marshetta, the black sheep son of a miner, grows up misunderstood and increasingly disconnected from his parents, Gary and Pam. Frustrated with life in his hometown, he drops out of high school and finds little kinship among the other teens. He harbors a quiet, stubborn ache for freedom and a complicated affection for Carla, a free-spirited older woman who runs a worn-down roadside ice-cream kiosk. Carla also has a young daughter with her ex-boyfriend Joe, a state trooper, which adds another layer to Rupert’s restless longing.

In a uneasy household dynamic, Gary declares himself the king of Pennsylvania, with Pam as queen and Rupert as the prince who will inherit the throne. The announcement underscores the simmering tensions in a family that sees money and land as the ultimate measure of worth. The revelation hits hard as Rupert and Gary both know Pam has been sleeping with the young miner Jack Sike, who has a newborn with his wife. The betrayal threads through every decision they make, casting a long shadow over trust and loyalty.

Gary is stubborn about selling the land his father left him, insisting on keeping it intact as a family relic and a symbol of power. Rupert, who has no intention of following his father into mining, crafts a perilous plan with Carla: kidnap Gary for a ransom of $200,000—the estimated value of the land—to fuel their escape from their stagnant town and start anew together.

The kidnapping succeeds, and Gary is hoisted into a trailer, where he uses his position to pull Pam into the plot, offering her half the money so she and Jack can abandon their own families. The arrangement sets up a tense, uneasy alliance that shatters and reshapes the family’s loyalties. Yet Rupert and Pam soon realize the plan is unraveling when they discover that Gary had already sold the land for cash a week earlier, leaving behind no clear path to the money.

Carla becomes a co-conspirator and a reluctant partner in the hold-up. They drive Gary to the nearby mine and trap him near a portable toilet, where Rupert grows convinced the hidden funds might be concealed. He assembles dynamite, planning to blow open the toilet and reclaim the cash, but the situation is dramatically complicated by the mine’s lethal methane gas and the danger bubbling beneath the surface.

As the danger escalates, mine rescue workers and police arrive, warning that the dynamite could trigger a terrible explosion. In a moment of improvised courage, Gary manages to pull Rupert to safety, but the blast seals Carla’s fate, and she is presumed dead.

The day after, the family’s rift begins to heal in the strangest of ways: Gary and Pam reconcile, while Rupert, shaken and estranged, runs away. He discovers that Carla is alive, a truth kept by Joe, and they too reconcile in a fragile, hopeful turn as Carla prepares to leave with Joe for Sacramento to be near her daughter. Rupert’s farewell to Carla is heartbreakingly blunt—he tells her he would rather be handcuffed to a fridge than speak to her again—before life pushes him forward on a new road.

With the road ahead open and uncertain, Rupert encounters a lone female biker who offers him a ride. In a last, quiet moment of connection, he accepts the offer and heads toward Pittsburgh, stepping into a future that promises both risk and a chance at reinvention. The film threads together themes of family loyalty, the lure of escape, and the hard choices that come with pursuing a different life, all set against a heartland backdrop that refuses to soften its edges.
