Ritzy McCarty [Pat O’Brien] is a boxer whose flashy footwork and magnetic personality light up the ring and draw big crowds. His showmanship doesn’t go unnoticed by savvy promoters, especially Stephens [Henry O’Neill], who helps push him toward bigger venues and brighter futures. Along the way, Ritzy crosses paths with Patricia Merrill [Claire Dodd], and the two embark on a high-profile affair that Joan McCarty [Glenda Farrell], Ritzy’s wife, accepts with a quiet mixture of tolerance and concern.
As Ritzy climbs higher, he learns a troubling truth: many of his wins were engineered, with opponents paid to lose, and he discovers that Joan had agreed to these conditions. The revelation fractures Ritzy’s world, and he walks away from the marriage in search of something more real and honest. The consequences ripple through the sport as Ritzy faces a suspension for taking part in a fixed fight, while Patricia’s interest cools as his star fades.
To make ends meet, Ritzy takes a job promoting a health lecture, drawing crowds and keeping his name in circulation. Patricia attends the event and even invites him to visit, but when he goes to see her, he finds his pregnant wife waiting at Patricia’s apartment. Faced with the imminent arrival of a child, Ritzy resolves to provide a better life for his family, agreeing to take a fight where he’d throw the match. Yet, in a twist of fate, he fights with resolve and defeats his opponent after learning that his wife has given birth to a boy.
The victory doesn’t go unnoticed. Stephens visits Ritzy in the hospital, impressed by the turn of events, and proposes to reinstate him in the ring—this time under legitimate terms and tournaments. The path forward hints at a return to the sport Ritzy loves, but on a cleaner, fairer footing.
