In 1966, in the quiet Kent village of Charthurst Green, a young woman named Pauline Cox accompanies her boyfriend Mike Robins to a local village cricket match where he is playing. As the game unfolds, Pauline grows bored and slips away from the crowd, seeking a change of pace away from the field. Her wandering leads her to the nearby railway halt, where she is greeted and briefly entertained with tea by the enigmatic figure known as the Railway Gatekeeper. The encounter feels quaint at first, but it quickly takes a darker turn as she is drawn into the gatekeeper’s world of quiet routines and odd hospitality.

There, she also crosses paths with his simple-minded assistant, Ewen, a character who had been seen earlier watching Pauline with Mike.
