The Olsen Gang 1968

The Olsen Gang, led by Ove Sprogøe as Egon Olsen, dreams of becoming millionaires and sets out a bold plan to change their lives. The story opens with Egon getting arrested for attempting to rob a store, while his partners in crime, Poul Bundgaard as Kjeld Jensen and Morten Grunwald as Benny Frandsen, slip away and begin plotting a more ambitious scheme. This early setback only fuels their resolve, and the trio soon shifts their attention to a prize that could fund their fantasies for years to come: a golden statue valued at 12 million.

After Egon is released, the gang refines their plan and starts to move through the steps with careful calculation. They study the statue’s security, map potential routes, and bide their time, buoyed by a mix of confidence and nerves. The tension builds as the heist finally unfolds: they pull off the theft of the enormous statue, turning their audacious ambition into a tangible score. Yet their path to riches quickly encounters a snag. On the way to the airport, the car runs out of gas, and the authorities seize the vehicle — the statue still inside — forcing Mortensen, Peter Steen, to stay hot on their trail as he relentlessly pursues the gang.

Despite the setback, the gang manages to recover the statue and hatches a new, cheeky plan to hide it where it would be safest from immediate discovery. They stash the statue in Kjeld’s daughter’s pram, a move that brings a surprising blend of humor and added risk into their pursuit. However, the situation takes a turn when Kjeld’s wife, Yvonne Jensen, becomes furious. She resents being kept waiting at the airport and chafes at the idea of the pram being left unattended on the sidewalk, announcing plans to return to her mother.

The chase intensifies as the gang heads after Yvonne, with Mortensen still hot on their tails. They close in and eventually manage to reclaim the pram, only to discover a critical twist: the statue is not inside after all. Egon, incensed and determined, delivers a defiant speech that underscores the group’s stubborn tenacity, but his revelation unsettles the moment and sends him scrambling away from his comrades. He abandons Benny and Kjeld as he charges after Yvonne, driven by a personal sense of urgency and a growing sense that the plan has spiraled beyond control.

Kjeld and Benny, meanwhile, trudge back home with the pram, a small victory shadowed by the mounting complications. They learn that Yvonne did not return to her mother after all but came back to Kjeld, complicating the family dynamics even further. In a lighter counterpoint to the chaos, Benny is later driven home by Lotte Tarp as Ulla, a moment that threads a little domestic humor into the high-stakes caper.

The police catch up with Egon on the ferry where Yvonne had been expected to be, and the chase finally reaches a tense breakpoint. Two years pass, and Egon is released from custody, stepping back into the world with the gang once again ready to push the boundaries of the law. The trio continues their anti-establishment antics by selling bananas outside the Copenhagen government building, a small-scale, steadfast echo of their larger dream to outwit authority and secure an improbable fortune.
