The Nutcracker Prince 1990

In 19th century Germany, Clara Stahlbaum, her younger brother Fritz, and their family gather to celebrate Christmas Eve. Clara cherishes the warmth of home, yet she feels a twinge of envy when Louise, her older sister, has Erik, Erik and a sense of growing up seems suddenly within reach. The festive mood brightens when Drosselmeier, Peter Boretski as Uncle Drosselmeier, arrives bearing marvels: a fully automated toy castle for everyone and a special Nutcracker for Clara. Fritz, eager to crack nuts, damages the Nutcracker, and Clara’s heart sinks. To lift her spirits, Drosselmeier tells a sweeping tale about how the Nutcracker became the Prince of the Dolls, a legend meant to soothe a disappointed heart.

The story unfolds with a King and a Queen who have a beautiful but vain daughter named Princess Perlipat, a figure vividly brought to life by Mona Waserman. To celebrate the King’s birthday, the Queen bakes a peculiar blue cheese cake, whose scent lures every castle mouse to the feast. The mice devour the cake, and the enraged King orders Drosselmeier, the royal inventor and magician, to capture them. With his nephew Hans, they succeed in trapping the Mouse Queen and her son, but the Mouse Queen escapes their grasp and curses Perlipat, turning her beautiful face into ugliness. The mission to cure her falls to Drosselmeier, who discovers that the Krakatooth Nut could reverse the spell, and the King proclaims a grand contest, inviting all princes to try. Yet the Krakatooth proves impossibly hard, snapping the teeth of every man who tries to crack it.

When all hope seems lost, Hans steps forward and cracks the Krakatooth, curing Perlipat of the spell. Furious, the Mouse Queen curses Hans himself, turning him into the Nutcracker. In the ensuing chaos, the Mouse Queen is killed by a falling statue, and her son sustains a damaged tail. With the Mouse Queen defeated, the Mouse King seizes control of the mice and vows revenge on Hans, while Drosselmeier is exiled by the ungrateful King. Clara is unsettled by this bleak ending, but Drosselmeier reassures her that the Nutcracker can break the spell if he can slay the Mouse King.

That night, Clara returns to the living room to spend time with the enchanted Nutcracker, and the Mouse King, along with an army of mice, closes in. A ghostly apparition of Drosselmeier appears and breathes life into the dolls—the Nutcracker, Marie, Trudy, and the toy soldier Pantaloon—igniting a fierce battle. Clara’s quick thinking saves the Nutcracker by tossing a slipper at the Mouse King, but she loses her balance, slips on a toy cannonball, and strikes her head, losing consciousness as the toys surge to life around her. The next morning, Drosselmeier visits, and Clara, shaken, accuses him of putting the enchanted nephew in danger; he reminds her that only she can help break the spell.

The Mouse King returns that night, angrier than before, and makes a fatal bid for the Nutcracker, though the doughty toy is able to defeat him in single combat. Pantaloon is damaged in the skirmish, and the group resolves to travel to the Land of the Dolls through Drosselmeier’s mechanical castle. Clara accompanies them after Drosselmeier magically shrinks her, leaving her family behind for the journey. In the Land of the Dolls, Clara is welcomed with fanfare, and she realizes she has fallen in love with the Nutcracker. Yet she hesitates to join him as his princess, afraid of abandoning her family, and her reluctance negates the spell that animates the dolls, who revert to lifeless toys. The Mouse King makes a final, desperate move, plunging off the castle balcony into the lake below, his strength waning as Clara weeps for the Nutcracker.

As mist swirls through the castle, Clara suddenly finds herself back at home, the Nutcracker missing and the question of what was real hanging in the air. She rushes to Drosselmeier’s workshop, where fear turns to relief when Hans returns—now freed from the spell and restored to human form—thanks to the Mouse King’s downfall. The tale closes with Clara holding onto a thread of memory, wondering what memories truly belong to her Christmas miracle, and what parts of the magical voyage might endure beyond the dream.
