The Night Is Young 2015

When the Venetian archduke Paul Gustave announces that he will attend her next performance, the world of a talented ballerina named Fanni shifts with a mix of ambition and naïve bravado. She decides to pursue Willy Fitch, a wealthy carriage driver, and she frames this gambit as a matter of patriotism to her friend and fellow dancer, Lisl Gluck. While Fanni schemes, Lisl seems more grounded in her own life, yet the flirtation of power and status surrounding the archduke draws Paul toward Lisl instead. Paul, already set to marry Countess Rafay, learns that the marriage must be postponed for six months for state reasons, and sees an opening to keep Lisl as his secret lover.

In the meantime, Lisl—engaged to a struggling ballet producer—receives an invitation to Paul’s villa from his valet, Szereny. Despite initial reluctance, the valet presses her acceptance, and soon she finds herself stepping onto a stage where class, control, and desire collide. The archduke, however, is a man who expects distance and discretion, and he makes clear that their relationship is not grounded in love; Lisl discovers that she would be confined to special quarters and would not be free to disturb his routine. Yet Paul is surprised to realize that Lisl does not seek love in return, either.

As the two begin to navigate their precarious arrangement, Paul spends an evening with the Countess Rafay, while Lisl finds solace in a night of merriment with Toni and Willy at her side. When Paul returns, he barely conceals his irritation, yet his mood softens upon hearing Lisl sing, revealing a spark of warmth beneath his stern exterior. A real connection blossoms when an unlikely accident ties them together on a carnival Ferris wheel, forcing them to spend the night in close proximity and letting a fragile romance take root.

The next day brings renewed tension. Toni accuses Lisl of abandoning their planned marriage, yet he quickly gives way to allowing her to resume her relationship with Paul once he learns that the archduke intends to finance the ballet—an opportunity that could redefine their lives. Despite this growing bond, Paul remains torn between desire and duty, and he is prepared to sacrifice his title to marry Lisl. Yet the emperor’s command looms large: the arranged marriage must go ahead, no matter the personal costs.

As this conflict reaches its emotional climax, Paul informs Lisl that he must leave her, a moment that plunges her into despair. Szereny offers quiet consolation as Lisl endures a tearful farewell dinner. In the end, Paul asks Lisl to kiss him one last time, then to turn away and never look back, sealing their romance in a memory tempered by duty and the heavy weight of obligation.
