In 1327 northern Italy, Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and his novice Adso of Melk travel to an isolated Benedictine abbey high in the Alps, sent to mediate a conflict between the Franciscan Order and the Avignon papacy. Once there, they become entangled in a series of baffling, violent deaths that threaten the fragile peace of the monastery.
