Set against the shadowy currents of the 1930s, Professor Thomas Smith is a University of California, Berkeley professor whose composed life masks a dangerous past. In 1917, under the name Schmidt, he belonged to a small cadre of Wehrmacht officers who set out to uncover the so-called secret of Africa and locate the legendary Mines of Kilimanjaro, believed to guard a colossal fortune in diamonds. After reaching the mine and plundering some treasures, the expedition is ambushed by a local tribe; all are killed except Schmidt, who survives and, renouncing the temptation of the mine’s riches, forges a new life in America.
