Decades ago, an alien crash-landed on Earth and lived as the enigmatic Howard Hope [Bruce Baron], a wealthy figure who keeps a patient vigil for a way back to his own world. In his tale of exile, Nepalese monks uncover a mysterious master key and hold it sacred as the Dragon Pearl, a relic that hums with energy and promises a path home. Howard thrives among humans while silently pursuing this elusive key, hoping to unlock his ship and depart Earth once the Pearl is within reach.
Pak Kei Wei [Ti Lung], driven by the desire to honor his late father, also pursues the Pearl, viewing it as a last beacon for his family’s memory. To track it down, Kei-Wei hires the crafty David Ko [Teddy Robin], who in turn recommends his friend Wisely [Sam Hui] to lend his wits to the quest. The hunt takes a dramatic turn when a failed attempt to buy the Pearl from a sham seller in Egypt alerts Howard that the treasure is slipping away. Howard turns to Wisely, tapping him for help in locating David Ko.
In Nepal, a daring scheme unfolds as David Ko engineers a plan with Wisely: he fakes his own kidnapping to distract the monastery and steal the Pearl during the commotion. The escape by plane ends in disaster when the Pearl’s energy disrupts the flight, though Wisely survives the crash. David is believed dead, but somehow endures. A telepathic, young monastery leader confirms that David survived and reveals that Wisely was maneuvered, compelling Wisely to aid the monks in recovering the sacred object.
Back in Hong Kong, Howard Hope’s assistant [Heidi Makinen] attempts to enlist Wisely to their side, but Wisely remains incorruptible and parts ways. Undeterred, Wisely travels to Kei-Wei’s home and encounters Sue Pak [Joey Wong Cho-Yin], Kei-Wei’s sister and a devoted reader of Wisely’s adventures. Sue is initially drawn to the reward, but she quickly senses Kei-Wei’s hostility toward Wisely and urges caution, guiding Wisely toward the truth rather than a payday.
Wisely secretly returns to Kei-Wei’s residence, where Sue Pak helps him access the lab and they uncover both David and the Dragon Pearl. David pleads with Wisely to whisk him away, and the trio makes a tense escape, with Wisely briefly using Sue as a shield against guards. Their triumph is short-lived, as Howard Hope’s henchmen close in, leading to a brutal pursuit that ends with David and the Pearl captured and spirited away to Egypt.
In the desert fortress of Egypt, Wisely and Sue press on, only to be confronted by Kei-Wei arriving to defend Sue. In the chaos, Kei-Wei tumbles into a perilous quicksand, and Wisely pulls him free at the last moment, risking his own life in the process. Both Kei-Wei and Sue fear Wisely may have perished, while Sue honors his sacrifice as she resolves to finish the mission.
Yet Wisely survives the ordeal, clawing his way out of a cavern and reuniting with his friends. The Pak siblings discover a little monk waiting in Wisely’s room, a sign of the monastery’s massacre at the hands of Howard’s incendiary powers left in the wake of his ruthless pursuit. David, spared because he never interfered with Howard’s plans, reveals that the Pearl is not a mere artifact but an advanced computer capable of interfacing with young minds.
With Howard continuing to threaten, Wisely and his allies insist that the Pearl be returned to the monks. Howard unveils a chilling truth: the Pearl is a solar pilot device meant to reactivate his ship, and he is not human in the way people expect. The little monk, recognizing the danger and the danger’s cost, retrieves the Pearl, and Howard gives chase. In a climactic clash atop a glacier, the Pearl sits on unstable ice as Howard lunges for it. He plummets onto the ship’s spire, fatally wounded, but with the help of his assistant he activates the ship using the key.
The little monk awakens to the realization that the monks’ beliefs about the Pearl were misguided and chooses not to pursue it any longer. As the ship surges from the mountain, a vast cloud rises to hide it from view. Wisely, Sue, Kei-Wei, and their companions barely escape the collapsing cavern, watching as the alien vessel ascends into the skies. The ship’s silhouette—vast and dragon-like—vanishes into the heavens, a final, shadowed nod to the legend it embodies, and a reminder of the long, cautious path between myth and truth.
