Andreas Kartak, a destitute man who sleeps beneath Paris’s bridges, receives a 200‑franc loan from a stranger on the condition that he’ll repay it to a nearby church when he’s able. Despite his fierce resolve to settle the debt, his chronic alcoholism and a string of misfortunes repeatedly thwart his efforts, forcing him to confront the harsh realities of his life.
