The Last Fiction Echo Score Breakdown

The Last Fiction presents a noteworthy effort in Iranian animation, delivering a visually ambitious adaptation of Shahnameh with commendable art direction and a resonant musical score. While the visual design and soundscape receive frequent praise, the narrative structure suffers from inconsistencies that hinder accessibility for viewers unfamiliar with the source material. Character voice work and dialogue are judged uneven, contributing to mixed emotional impact. Overall, the film marks progress for the region's animation industry but remains limited by storytelling and technical execution.

Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.

  • Art & Craft 70

In terms of art and craft, the film showcases a marked improvement over prior Iranian animations, with detailed drawings and a blend of 2D and 3D elements that many reviewers find impressive. The direction and production design are praised for ambition and for bringing mythic characters to life. However, critiques note occasional low frame rates and technical roughness that prevent the visual quality from matching global standards.

  • Character & Emotion 60

Character and emotion receive mixed feedback; the vocal performances of well‑known Iranian actors are highlighted as a strength, yet several reviewers mention dubbing and dialogue that feel stilted or poorly localized. Emotional resonance is achieved in moments of heroism, but the overall depth of characters is perceived as limited, especially for audiences lacking familiarity with the original legends.

  • Story & Flow 55

The story and flow are described as ambitious but uneven. While the adaptation introduces epic themes that many find compelling, numerous comments point to plot holes, rushed pacing, and a confusing structure for newcomers. The narrative’s originality is praised, yet the execution is criticized for lacking cohesion, which reduces overall engagement.

  • Sensory Experience 78

Sensory experience stands out, with the soundtrack consistently praised for its power and cultural authenticity. Music by Christophe Rezaei is highlighted as a strong element, though occasional volume imbalances are noted. Visual style receives commendation for classic animation aesthetics, and sound design is generally regarded as effective in supporting the film’s atmosphere.

  • Rewatch Factor 68

Rewatch factor is moderately high; several viewers express interest in multiple viewings to appreciate the music, visual details, and thematic depth. Positive enthusiasm for the film’s cultural significance and its novelty within Iranian animation fuels repeat interest, while some detractors who found the narrative weak indicate lower likelihood of revisiting.
