The film tells the poignant story of a Paiute man named Willie Boy, who embarks on a perilous journey across the desert following the tragic and accidental death of Carlota’s father. This incident leads to the young couple being unjustly blamed, triggering a relentless pursuit by a group of indigenous people seeking justice for the death.

As the chase unfolds, they find themselves increasingly at risk. At one point, Carlota (played by [Mainei Kinimaka]) suffers a snake bite, rendering her gravely ill. In a desperate move, Willie races off to find the necessary medicine, leaving Carlota behind at Ruby Mountain. Meanwhile, the pursuing posse, led by Sheriff Wilson, becomes hastily agitated, eager to exact revenge. However, Sheriff Wilson insists on bringing Willie Boy in alive, threatening the others with dire consequences if they do not comply with his wishes.

Tragedy strikes when, from a distance, an indigenous member of the posse mistakes Carlota for Willie Boy and fires, which leads to her untimely death. The grievous loss sends shockwaves through the heart of Willie who is inconsolable after learning that Carlota has been returned to Banning, California in a tragic turn of fate.

With his foes closing in, Willie devises a plan to confront the posse on his own terms. He leads them into a desert enclosure encircled by sheer cliffs, where he bravely opens fire from above, deliberately aiming only for their horses rather than the men themselves. During the chaos, Sheriff Wilson shouts out the devastating news about Carlota’s death, leaving Willie Boy in despair. He momentarily contemplates taking his own life, holding his rifle with a heavy heart, yet something within him refuses to succumb to that fate, and he ultimately chooses to continue his escape.

In an outlandish twist, the posse comes up with a plan to fabricate Willie’s death for sensational newspaper headlines, using an unrelated man named Big Jim to pose as a deceased Willie Boy. However, history tells a different tale. According to oral accounts from the Chemehuevi tribe, it is revealed that Willie actually survived the grim events of 1909 and spent much of his life in seclusion near Pahrump, Nevada, where he later succumbed to Tuberculosis. The epic journey saw both Willie Boy and Carlota navigating through an inhospitable landscape for approximately 26 days and 600 miles, marking it as one of the most infamous manhunts of the Wild West. The narrative has evolved over the years, with early newspapers erroneously alleging that Willie Boy murdered Carlota, a claim that is now firmly debunked.
