In 1716 a mysterious epidemic kills three‑quarters of Japan’s men, reversing gender roles so women dominate and men are prized for fertility. Poor youth Unoshin Mizuno loves Onobu but his low birth blocks marriage, so he joins the Ohoku—the shogun’s inner chambers—where 3,000 handsome men vie for the female shogun’s favor. After the 7th shogun dies, his successor Yoshimune Tokugawa ascends and enters the Ohoku, a realm of ambition.
