Patsy Lee, [Michelle Mao], is a high school student who toils to gain admission into a good college, hoping to escape the monotony of her small Arizona town. Her mother is often busy with work, and her grandfather, Chuck Lee, [James Hong], expresses frustration over Patsy’s disinterest in her Chinese heritage and language.
Despite the family tensions, Patsy finds support in her best friend Squirrel, [Anna Harr], and her close companion Hopper, [Matthew Sato], with whom there is an unspoken romantic tension.
The ordinary turns extraordinary when Frank, [Dante Basco], a rat, and Hank, [Dave Sheridan], a chicken—both personified animals—arrive in search of a magical box.
After this unexpected encounter, Patsy discovers the box they sought, and she, along with Squirrel, Hopper, and her grandfather, Chuck Lee, [James Hong], is transported to a mystical land brimming with magic and danger.
This realm is ruled by the malevolent Lord Kuang, [Bai Ling], who seeks the magical box to unleash her full destructive power.
Along the journey, they face dangerous butterflies and disguised ogres, as well as Wu Witch and a hopping vampire.
They must navigate this perilous realm, protect the box, and seek a way back home.
Guiding them is Ao the Wise, [George Takei], a patient tortoise who offers counsel at crucial moments.
