Adrien Williams is released from a mental institution and, with her former doctor, Henry Thompson, aiming to help her rejoin society, she takes a job at a country club on the East Coast. There, she steps into the glittering world of the snooty, rich “beautiful people.” The social scene introduces Brittany Foster, a young woman who befriends Adrien and pulls her into a tight-knit clique of wealthy teenagers. Brittany’s circle whispers that Adrien bears a striking resemblance to Brittany’s older sister, Sandra, who had moved away, a comparison that both flatters and unsettles Adrien.

She returns to the country club just as an end-of-summer party draws the town’s attention. Using the information Kelly shared, Adrien pieces together the horrific truth: Brittany was the one who killed Sandra and had merely pretended that Sandra moved away. Adrien arrives at the party dressed as Sandra, a move that shocks Brittany as she mistakes Adrien for her sister. In a panic, Brittany trails into the woods to unearth Sandra’s body, determined to prove Sandra is truly gone.

Confrontation follows as Adrien stands firm, and Brittany lunges at her. In a charged moment, Brittany bluntly confesses her reasons for killing her sister, a revelation that exposes the depths of her insecurity and need for control. The gathering crowd outside bears witness to Brittany’s unraveling, recognizing the extent of her madness and the murder of Sandra. Adrien steps away from the country club and its toxic glamour, leaving Brittany to face the consequences alone. The film closes on a chilling note: Brittany ends up back in the mental institution, and in the final scene, she uses her charm on a male orderly, suggesting she would likely find a way to slip free again.
