The House of Sun 2009

The film unfolds in the early 1970s USSR, following Sasha, Svetlana Ivanova, the daughter of a CPSU dignitary who has just finished high school and earned admission to a medical institute. Her world widens when she meets Gerda, Darya Moroz, and becomes part of Gerda’s circle of hippie friends: the blacksmith Maloy, the Chilean revolutionary Juan, the long-haired Skeleton, and the talented artist Korean. Woven into this new life is a sense of rebellion and curiosity that draws Sasha away from a strictly regimented path toward a freer, louder existence.

Her father marks her admission with a ticket to a holiday in Bulgaria, a gesture meant to celebrate achievement. Yet Sasha, restless and searching, stops the bus on its way to the airport and chooses a different route: she and her new companions board a train toward Crimea, stepping into a world that feels both inviting and perilous. The group’s days in Crimea are punctuated by improvised discos and nights spent dancing to rock music broadcast on pirate radio, all set against a backdrop of rented houses, coastal air, and the glow of fires on the shore.

A shadow hangs over their activities: a mysterious “Trouble Woman,” the daughter of the local militsiya chief, becomes a symbol of the blurred lines between counterculture and state authority. The hippies—and the Korean, who is also part of their circle—are watched by a KGB officer sent from Moscow, a reminder that their freedoms are fragile and easily challenged. The tension heightens when the Korean is arrested at the bus station as he seeks to return to Moscow, a stark moment that exposes the risks of defying the system.

A brawl with demobilized border guards then escalates into a confrontation with the militsiya, and the group’s fate hangs in the balance. To secure their release, Sun turns to his father, the Soviet Admiral Nikita Vysotsky, who holds the key to leverage and influence within the system. The conflict is not resolved by force alone; the Troubles Woman steps in, using money to bribe her mother—the militsiya officer—in a bid to secure their freedom and end the immediate danger hovering over the troupe.

With the hippies freed, the moment turns into a fervent, sunlit celebration on the beach, a bonfire-lit gathering that marks a bittersweet victory and a fragile sense of belonging. Yet the story closes on a more intimate note: Sun burns his cabin, the “house of the sun,” a space he shared with Sasha, a private symbol of the fragile, luminous bond they cultivated in a world straining at the seams of conformity and control. The final scenes linger on the glow of embers and the enduring question of what it means to choose freedom in a society that watches every move.
