Prof. Calvin Q. Calculus is a meticulous scientist who finally develops a portable hole invention, despite his wife Gertrude repeatedly nagging and rambling through the short. The breakthrough lands in a celebratory newsreel that highlights a playful range of uses: saving a baby from a locked safe, gaining an edge in a golf game by cheating, and giving dogs a fresh place to bury their bones. The tone mixes light humor with a sly wink at how a single hole could reshape everyday life, inviting viewers to imagine the absurd practicality of a tool that bends space just enough to matter.

Spurred by the film’s glow, a thief steals the briefcase full of Calvin’s portable holes and pilfers the world with them, pulling off exploits like emptying Fort Knox and snatching a dancing girl from a burlesque house. The chase tightens as law enforcement closes in, and when the thief is cornered against a wall, he uses the last hole to slip through and appear to escape—only to surface inside a prison. Calvin reads about the arrest in the paper and feels a reluctant relief, glad that justice may have caught up with the misused invention.

Back at home, the nagging and domineering wife [Gertrude] is furious with him for not treating her properly and declares that one of them must leave. In a provocative counter-move, Calvin fashions one more portable hole and drops it on the floor. The moment the wife steps onto it, she falls through. A few seconds later, Satan himself emerges from the hole, hurls her back to Earth, and offers the cartoon’s closing barb:
