The Fantasticks 2000

In a clever scheme to create a match made in heaven, two devoted fathers, Amos Babcock Bellamy (played by Joel Grey) and Ben Hucklebee (portrayed by Brad Sullivan), take their children’s happiness into their own hands. They devise a plan to unite Luisa (played by Jean Louisa Kelly) and Matt (portrayed by Joey McIntyre), understanding that meddling in their children’s lives may not end in their favor. Instead, they cleverly employ reverse psychology, forging a fake feud so convincing that it not only drives a wedge between their families but also prohibits any form of communication between the star-crossed lovers.

As expected, their ruse stirs romantic feelings between Luisa and Matt. However, the two fathers must tread lightly to keep their intricate plan under wraps. To assist them in this theatrical deception, they bring in the flamboyant El Gallo (played by Jonathon Morris), a carnival owner with a knack for the dramatic. Alongside El Gallo is his troupe of performers, which features the experienced actor Henry Albertson (portrayed by Barnard Hughes) and the quiet Mortimer (played by Teller), who aid in orchestrating a daring “kidnapping” of Luisa. This bold act sets Matt off on an exhilarating rescue mission.

As Luisa and Matt navigate their budding romance, which they imagine will lead to a blissful domestic life, they soon confront the harsh realities of love as presented by El Gallo and his crew. This unexpected journey gradually shifts their naive understanding of romance into a more profound, matured perspective on what it truly means to be in love.
