Janos Szabo is a hopeful new Hungarian immigrant who, on his first day in New York City, is trapped in a hotel fire that leaves his face hideously scarred. He is refused employment due to his appearance and, though possessing tremendous skill as a watchmaker, is willing to do any work. In extreme poverty, and despite believing that dishonesty can never bring happiness, he resorts to safecracking to obtain food, medicine, and a warm bed for his only friend, Dinky. Eventually he becomes the leader of a gang of thieves and raises money to commission and wear a realistic latex mask of his own face, a drastic attempt to rewrite how the world sees him.

Janos Szabo then falls in love with Helen Williams, a blind woman who perceives only the good in him, and he hopes to leave his life of crime behind. Unfortunately, his gang comes to believe that he has betrayed them to the police, and they attempt to kill him by car bomb. He survives, but Helen is killed in the attack, a tragedy that hardens his resolve and deepens his isolation. In a bold and desperate move, Janos disguises himself as the pilot of the gang’s private plane and, during the escape plan, lands it in the Arizona desert. He deliberately dumps the fuel, suicidally stranding both the gang and himself without food or water, dooming them all to a slow death.

The story closes with a stark confrontation between desire, loyalty, and punishment. Janos’s body, along with the remains of his enemies, is eventually found by the police, leaving a haunting impression of how far one man will go to escape a world that has rejected him—and how, in the end, that escape costs everything. The film lingers on themes of identity, revenge, and the price of dreaming beyond one’s fate, enriched by the tension between Janos’s skilled precision as a craftsman and the chaotic moral choices that propel him toward catastrophe.
