Steven Early, Louis Hayward, an American diplomat’s son educated in England, arrives at West Point and earns the nickname “The Duke” for his refined bearing. He quickly proves himself as both a diligent student and a capable athlete, especially on the ice where he shines in hockey. His roommates and close friends are cadets Sonny Drew, Tom Brown, and Jack West, Richard Carlson; he also finds a romantic interest in Ann Porter, Joan Fontaine.

When he learns that Jack’s mother is struggling with the family business and needs help, Steve quietly wires money to her after Taps to spare Jack from having to sacrifice West Point. He asks her to tell Jack that all is well and to keep the sender’s identity secret. Back at the academy, the lie about his whereabouts to cover the trip is revealed, and this violation of the Honor Code leads to him being shunned by the corps for an entire year.

A pivotal moment comes before a major hockey game against a Canadian cadet team. Sonny suffers a serious accident that temporarily robs West Point of its leading player, leaving the squad short-handed. To keep the game going, Steve wears Sonny’s jersey and steps into the lineup, helping the team win the contest. In the aftermath, however, he contemplates resignation, determined to step away once the celebration ends.

Yet the truth about Steve’s actions spreads through the men and women who care for him when Jack’s mother explains what happened and who helped her. The cadets, feeling a mix of guilt and gratitude, welcome him back into the fold, recognizing the sacrifices he made for a friend and for the greater good. With the weight of the past year lifted, Steve’s courage and loyalty win over those around him, and he ultimately becomes engaged to Ann, tying his future to both duty and affection.
