The Crying Woman 1979

Jacques Doillon returns after a long absence to his wife Dominique Laffin and their daughter Lola Doillon. They inhabit an isolated house on a hill in Haute-Provence, a setting that mirrors the emotional distance that has grown between them. Dominique breaks into tears at the sight of him, a response that reveals the weight of years apart. She had driven him away because she cannot stand the way he cries; he remains helpless against the excesses of his emotion. Yet this return is bound to be about more than a reunion: he comes back because he loves another woman, a new presence complicating their lives.

After Lola suffers a minor accident, Dominique realizes she cannot continue living alone. She decides to meet Haydée Haydée Politoff, the mysterious new woman in Jacques’s life, and tries to begin some kind of uneasy truce. Jacques Doillon and Haydée move into the house, but soon he leaves again. In the meantime, Haydée helps Dominique care for Lola, creating a fragile dependency that unsettles the household.

When Jacques returns, the tension of past loyalties and present desires intensifies. Haydée’s situation appears uncertain—she may be pregnant, but the test is negative, which makes the future of the affair even more fragile. Realizing that this relationship has no real future, Haydée decides to leave. Dominique responds with a drastic, almost unhinged gesture, attempting to harm Haydée with Jacques’s car.

Left alone, Jacques and Dominique confront each other directly, but the possibility of reconciliation evaporates. Dominique ultimately leaves with Lola, stepping away from the life they shared and leaving Jacques to confront his solitude in the house that once brought them together.
