Eddie Rice, John Payne, a decorated World War II veteran, endures a head wound that leaves him with a permanent form of amnesia. In a San Francisco military hospital he wakes with no memory of his life, family, or friends prior to his enlistment, and doctors tell him there’s no medical cure. With no clear clues to his past, authorities suggest that a return to Los Angeles might trigger familiar faces or forgotten connections that could help fill in the blanks.

Returning to the city, his presence stirs recognition from people who know him, though the truth is more complicated than it seems: they identify him as Eddie Riccardi, a dangerous gangster who disappeared years earlier. The prospect of slipping back into a crime-filled identity threatens to pull him deeper into danger. Amid this confusion enters Nina Martin, Ellen Drew, a woman who initially appears to be an ally but quickly places him under the watchful eye of Vince Alexander, the grim crime boss who rules a shadowy network. Vince Alexander, Sonny Tufts, who once trusted Eddie, is now determined to bring him down, even if it means framing him for the murder of a police officer.
