Late 1970s. Petra Grust, Julia Jentsch takes up her position as a biology teacher at the Odenwald School (OSO), the renowned model for reform education, and earns the trust of the charismatic headmaster Simon Pistorius. The mood at the boarding school, however, is uneasy: students and teachers share showers, younger pupils drink and smoke, and a troubling atmosphere of boundary-crossing behavior lingers just beneath the surface. The environment is painted not as a utopia of learning, but as a place where appearances can obscure troubling truths.

Petra becomes aware of 13-year-old Frank Hoffmann, Patrick Joswig, a boy who looks disturbed and carries obvious emotional strain. She offers him care, yet she struggles to identify the source of his problems. Her concern grows as she pieces together troubling clues: she witnesses a teacher with a naked boy in the forest, and she sees Simon Pistorius leaving a shower while a desperate Frank crouches nearby. When Petra tries to raise questions, her colleagues refuse to acknowledge what she senses, and the truth remains shielded by a network of loyalty to the headmaster and the school’s reputation.

Erik von der Burg, Béla Gabor Lenz (the best friend of Frank), is also a victim of Pistorius’s abuse. When Erik tells his mother, the consequences ripple through the school and he ends up dropping out due to drug possession. Frank’s fear intensifies as he learns that he might have to spend holidays with Pistorius, and he even voices threats of self-harm. Petra’s understanding of Pistorius’s wrongdoing deepens as she connects these painful incidents into a broader, systemic pattern, even as her questions meet stubborn denial from those in power.

Frank’s father, Helmut Hoffmann, Rainer Bock and the chairman of the school’s sponsoring association, would rather cling to the appearance of an impeccably run institution than believe his own son’s painful testimony. Petra seeks help from a journalist friend to investigate the reform pedagogue, hoping to expose the truth. Yet she finds that Pistorius’s influence extends into the highest circles, making a public reckoning extraordinarily difficult and slow to come.

Three decades pass. Frank and Petra meet again, but the scars linger. Petra never returns to teaching, and Frank—like many other victims—has been unable to speak about the crimes for years, letting the offenses hover just beyond the reach of the law. The memory remains a weight that resists closure, even as Frank plans a protest during a milestone anniversary at the OSO. Petra stands ready to testify about the events of that era, confronting a history that institutions hoped would stay buried.
