The Astounding She-Monster 1957

In a distant part of the cosmos, a planet’s inhabitants fear that Earth, if left unchecked, could destroy the universe, so they decide to reach out to Earth. On the American side, the action centers on Nat Burdell Kenne Duncan and Brad Conley Ewing Miles Brown, two ruthless gangsters who kidnap wealthy socialite Margaret Chaffee Marilyn Harvey. They are joined by the gun moll Esther Malone Jeanne Tatum, and together they head toward the remote San Gabriel Mountains to wait for the ransom demanded from Chaffee’s father.

That same night, geologist Dick Cutler Robert Clarke spots what he believes is a meteor crashing into the forest. Out of the smoky impact emerges a striking, radiant female alien in a skintight suit who can kill simply by touch. The newcomers take shelter in Cutler’s cabin, and the tension mounts as Burdell sends Conley to confront the alien after she’s glimpsed at a window. Conley is killed by the alien, whose touch proves deadly and whose gunshots fail to stop her. Burdell, eerily unscathed by the alien’s power, retrieves Conley’s body while Cutler explains to Chaffee that Conley’s death and Burdell’s exposure to a radium-like hazard may require urgent medical attention.

With panic setting in, Burdell decides to flee that very night, even as the trio must navigate a dangerous mountain road in a Jeep with no headlights. Before they can escape, the alien smashes through the cabin window. Everyone scatters; the alien captures Esther Malone and kills her. When the alien moves toward Burdell, he deftly sidesteps and she tumbles down an embankment. Believing she is dead, Burdell presses the group to depart, but the pursuit doesn’t end there—she halts their escape and kills Burdell as they race away.

Left with all the gangsters dead, Cutler and Chaffee hurry back to the cabin. Cutler theorizes that the alien’s body is made of radium and platinum, granting her protection from Earth’s atmosphere. He devises a plan and launches a corrosive acid at the intruder, killing her by disintegration. Yet one piece remains: the locket she wore remains intact. Inside, Cutler discovers a note written in English from the “Master of the Council of Planets of the Galaxy,” inviting Earth to join the Council. This revelation reshapes the narrative: the alien was a peaceful emissary who acted only in self-defense, and now Earth must decide whether to respond with goodwill or revenge.

Margaret Chaffee reflects that the Council, with its purported “superior wisdom,” will understand that human fear sparked the tragedy, and that another emissary may yet be sent. Cutler acknowledges the question left hanging, asking aloud, with a weighty pause, whether the sending of a new emissary will herald genuine goodwill or merely vengeance:

But will it come to bring us good will or simply avenge her death?
