The Assassin Next Door 2009

In Tel Aviv, Olga Kurylenko as Galia, a Ukrainian sex slave, hatches a desperate escape with another woman. They are captured and beaten, and she watches her friend stabbed to death. She begs for release, but a ruthless Russian mobster sees her resourcefulness and assigns her a new, deadly role: assassinating a man in a coffee shop. She completes the hit, and in return is given a shabby apartment and a pittance, marking the start of a perilous cycle of violence that she will navigate alone for a time.

To survive, she undertakes intermittent assassinations while trying to earn money and reclaim her passport so she can return to Ukraine and reunite with her daughter.

Her life becomes entangled with Elinor, the neighbor whose husband abuses her. Elinor is portrayed by Ninet Tayeb and becomes a lifeline for Galia as the two women form a growing, affectionate friendship in the shadow of danger. Elinor’s husband, Zohar Shtrauss, looms as a threatening presence in their world.

As their bond deepens, Galia helps Elinor feel a spark of hope amid brutality, and the two start to rely on each other for courage and survival.

Galia carries out her last hit, but the Russian mafia turns on her and tries to kill her. She robs the mafia of the money she is owed and tries to persuade Elinor to run away with her. At first she is not successful until Elinor stabs her husband when he is beating her and she becomes pregnant. As they run away together, the mafia closes in, and their flight becomes a brutal series of bloody shootouts as they fight for freedom and a chance at a new life.
