In 1869, the United States is mapping its vast West, but the Colorado River remains a frontier of mystery and danger. Maj. John Wesley Powell John Beal is a former Northern major with a keen scientific mind and a war-wound, having lost an arm at Shiloh. He gathers nine men, including his brother Walter Powell James Drury, and secures four boats to attempt a daring ascent to chart the river.
The journey is long and grueling, marked by treacherous rapids, harsh weather, and dwindling supplies. At one point, trouble erupts when a boat is destroyed by whiskey-fueled chaos among the crew.
Along the way, they meet Jim Baker Roy Barcroft, a rugged trapper who is married to an Indigenous woman and counts Powell as a friend. Baker warns them about looming falls and the danger they pose, foreshadowing the hardships to come. After his warning, fear and tension lead to a split: one man abandons the expedition, while three others mutiny, choosing to press forward overland.
The mutineers’ plans unravel as they are killed by Indians, who later treat them as the killers of a squaw, adding a grim note to the already perilous trek.
Undeterred, Powell perseveres and, after a long voyage, locates the point where the Colorado River flows into Lake Mead, sealing a historic achievement and opening new knowledge about this great waterway.
