It is the day of the abdication of Emperor Puyi, and a once-prosperous family, the Pang clan, faces a long decline. Zhongliang, a thirteen-year-old who arrives at the Pang estate to live with his sister Xiuyi and her husband Zhengda, steps into a world of rigid hierarchy and quiet cruelties. Zhengda is a heavy opium user, and the family’s dynamics are strained by power, age, and habit. Ruyi, the daughter of the family’s head, has been raised from birth as an opium addict, which bars her from an ordinary marriage and keeps her tethered to a life she did not choose. As she runs through the vast estate, Zhongliang is first treated as a servant, even asked to prepare Zhengda’s nightly opium pipe. Within this tense atmosphere, a shadowy danger lingers: Zhengda’s grasping influence over Xiuyi’s life, paired with the explicit suggestion of abuse that marks Zhongliang’s early years. After six uneasy months of mistreatment, Zhongliang flees the Pang estate, his future unsettled and unresolved.
A decade passes, and Zhongliang reappears in a markedly altered role. Now a gigolo, he seduces wealthy, married women on behalf of a powerful broker named Biggie, who uses a calculated scheme to ensure blackmail against any spouse who confesses the affair. Zhongliang signals his partners as a couple becomes “captured” and hooded, allegedly murdered, only to be blackmailed into silence. The operation has become highly lucrative, and Biggie treats Zhongliang with a paternal warmth that masks a colder, transactional loyalty. Among his targets is a woman known as the woman of Zephyr Lane, a figure Zhongliang has grown to care for and whom he pretends to love more than his boss’s scheme warrants. When Zhongliang fabricates a story that her husband is away, he hopes to spare the marriage, but the truth unsettles him.
Back at the Pang estate, Zhengda has been incapacitated for a long time—unable to move or speak. When the patriarch dies, Ruyi is named the head of the family, a decision the elders challenge because they believe women are weak and unfit to govern. Duanwu, a cousin with little prospect of succession, is positioned to assist her. Yet when Ruyi uses her authority to expel the concubines who once served the household, the elders punish Duanwu for what they see as a lack of manliness. Ruyi recognizes that the former concubines have gained a freedom she herself longs for.
Biggie presses Zhongliang to win Ruyi’s heart again, sending him back to the estate to seduce her. Zhongliang encounters his sister again—whom he despises for her complicity in his escape years earlier—but she defends him and continues to pull the strings of fate. Ruyi falls in love with Zhongliang and, to test herself, seduces Duanwu to practice for the man she believes will take her away. Zhongliang, haunted by his past and unable to fully commit, abandons the plan and returns to Shanghai alone. Ruyi’s heartbreak deepens, and Duanwu and the elders’ animosity toward him grows.
To atone for his failure, Zhongliang agrees to fulfill a new blacklist of duties: to swindle the Zephyr Lane woman for Biggie’s benefit. Yet in a ploy that exposes the limits of his loyalty, he drives Ruyi to Shanghai, where the two are drawn into a modern world neither fully understands. Across from Zhongliang’s rendezvous, the Zephyr Lane woman watches as the deception unfolds. She confronts Zhongliang with a startling question: did he ever truly love her? He does not answer. The scene ends with the woman leaping to her death from a balcony, a ruinous moment that leaves Zhongliang distraught and Biggie noting that Zhongliang is now permanently ruined.
Ruyi, meanwhile, confronts Zhongliang in a dance hall, repeatedly asking whether his love extended to her or to the Zephyr Lane woman. He remains unspecific, and when she returns to the boarding room in Shanghai with Duanwu, a brutal act unfolds: Duanwu rapes her, compounding the trauma of her world opened to new freedoms she did not seek.
Ruyi returns to the Pang estate to find Jingyun—the fiancé whose return had once given her a future—back in the picture. Jingyun informs her that their betrothal was ended by his family against his wishes, and he arrives with an assurance that he will claim her. Zhongliang, sensing a chance to reclaim what he never fully possessed, pleads with Ruyi to forgive him, but she confesses that she no longer loves him and accepts the prospect of marriage to Jingyun.
That evening, Zhongliang prepares Ruyi’s opium pipe as if to replicate past rituals, and it is revealed that he poisoned Zhengda with arsenic, aided by his sister who knew of the plan. In a twist that seals his remorse, Zhongliang tries to intervene when Ruyi refuses the poison, but he arrives too late. The next morning, as he prepares to board a ship to leave, he is shot down at the dock, a violent end to a life haunted by betrayal and attempted salvation.
Duanwu is declared the new head of the Pang clan, while Ruyi is shown confined to a wheelchair, a stark image of the way power and fate have altered her life. The film closes with a final, almost elegiac, image: a brief montage of the three childhood versions of Zhongliang, Duanwu, and Ruyi standing together in the doorway on the night of the Emperor’s abdication, a quiet reminder of the innocence lost and the choices that shaped their futures.
