Eight years after the murder of his wife, Margot, pediatrician Alexandre Beck receives a puzzling email that carries security footage which appears to show Margot alive and unharmed. Simultaneously, investigators uncover two bodies buried near the same lake where Margot was killed, and the mounting evidence begins to cast a dark shadow on Beck, hinting that he might be involved in the new killings. The film then shifts to a devastating backstory that sheds light on the motive and danger at the heart of Margot’s death. Two months before the lake incident, Margot learned that Philippe Neuville, the son of aristocrat Gilbert Neuville, had sexually abused children from a trusted group. When she attempted to secure a confession, Margot was brutalized by Philippe, an assault witnessed by none of the apologies that would ease the pain. Her father, driven by a desperate need to protect his family, intervened by shooting Philippe.

Fearing retaliation from Gilbert, who exerts substantial influence over the police, Margot’s father begins wiretapping Gilbert’s phones in an attempt to uncover the broader conspiracy. In a chilling discovery, he uncovers that Gilbert had hired two men to murder Margot. In a calculated countermeasure, he kills the two hired men, fakes Margot’s death using the body of a deceased heroin addict, and places Margot into hiding to shield her from the dangerous reach of Gilbert. After this confession, Margot’s father takes his own life to avoid arrest, leaving Beck to carry the weight of the truth, especially since Beck was wired for the investigation that day.
